Here at Working Person’s Store, we know that when you’re on the job, you have a lot on your mind. Managing staff, meeting deadlines and all while trying to stay safe are just a few of your concerns. The last thing you need to worry about is slipping and falling. When you’re on your feet and in a hurry, you don’t have time to wonder if your safety footwear has good enough traction, you just need them to do their job just like you do every day.
In order to be considered “slip-resistant”, shoes must meet certain safety regulations and slip-resistant standards. A shoe or boot’s slip-resistance is based on friction or traction. Friction is defined as the resistance to lateral movement caused by the contact between two surfaces, one surface being the sole of the shoe. The degree of a shoe or boot’s slip-resistance is determined by the coefficient of friction (COF), the numerical result of the horizontal force divided by the vertical force. A higher COF means more slip-resistance.
One slip-resistance standard is the ASTM F 1677, a test method involving a Portable Inclinable Articulated Strut Slip Tester, a tribometer called the Brungraber Mark II. This test method, which has been around since the 1970’s, does not test a whole shoe, but 3” by 3” sample of the shoe material. A weighted strut with a fixed angle pushes a movable arm against the test surface. The point where the test sample becomes loose from the surface is recorded and determines the COF.
